About Marinella Setti

Marinella Setti

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in Sept 1964, but I live in London now. My father Luiz Antonio is a retired Navy Officer, and my mother Kilza is a musician, composer and Musicologist. I have an older sister, Clarissa, who is a chef and a painter. I have 2 nephews: Gabriel and Louie. I’ve been married to Pete, a landscape gardener and budding comedian, for 3 years.

I studied Languages, Graphic Design and Fine Art at University, and I also played drums and sang with bands back in Brazil, until I realized my true calling was filmmaking. I came to the UK in 1995 to pursue a career in film, and became a script supervisor for film and TV in order to learn the craft on a film set whilst earning money. I started making my own films 12 years ago, and am preparing to direct my first feature film.

I shot my first ‘experiment’ – a documentary about the nature of art - as a project for SELP, a Landmark Education programme; in actual fact Landmark gave me the tools to bring into reality what my soul always dreamt of: making films.

My films have so far won a Grand Jury prize, Audience award, Humanitarian and Peace awards – and a couple of Best Actress prizes too. I am in the process of setting up a film fund which will finance my films, and those whose talent I believe in.
